Birdwatching
On January 29, 2008, Quivira NWR and Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area were jointly named as one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas. Both are close to Great Bend.
They are the principal stops on the Central Flyway, making the Great Bend area a mecca for birders.
A new interpretation center is being constructed at Cheyenne Bottoms where K-156 highway crosses the southeast edge of the bottoms. It is scheduled to open in April, 2009.

Although they aren't in the wild, there are lots of birds to be seen just a few blocks north our place. They're in the zoo at the city's Brit Spaugh Park. In the near future, Brit Spaugh will house the federal raptor center for this part of the nation.
There is no admission charge at Brit Spaugh Zoo.
